C+D can actually benefit society.

Durkhiem states that C+D is a normal, inevitable and integral part of society and having a " crimless society is contradictory in its terms."

boundary maintenance
C+D can act as boundary maintenance as seeing a criminal prosecuted reassures people that society is still functioning, re-affirms their norms and values, shows what society will tolerate

adaption and change
if societys norms were too strong, it would show that society is unhealthy. for change to occur it will first be seen as deviant. this shows society is diverse creative and healthy.

social solidarity
crime brings integration as a society will come together. e.g. after the london riots the community came together to clean.

preventing other crime
smalller acts of C+D acts as a warning sign to prevent individuals commiting larger acts of C+D. for example getting a warning for smoking weed may prevent an individual from class A drugs.
