Duration of memory

?
What is meant by the term 'duration'?
How long something is remembered for and can be recalled
1 of 11
What is the difference between the duration of STM and LTM?
STM duration is very short, a matter of seconds whereas LTM duration is potentially forever, from 2 hours to 100 years
2 of 11
What did Peterson and Peterson do?
A study on the duration of STM
3 of 11
How did they do their study?
24 students were tested over 8 trials. On each trial a participant was given a consonant syllable and a 3 digit number. After an interval they had to recall the syllable and during the trial had to count backwards from the number
4 of 11
What did this study show?
After 3 seconds, 90% were correct but after 18 seconds 2% were correct. This suggests STM has a very short duration, less than 18 seconds
5 of 11
Why does this study lack ecological validity?
Because the task was artificial and does not represent a true everyday memory task
6 of 11
What is another problem with the study?
The material being remembered may have been displaced rather than have been decayed as participants had to count backwards, so the syllables may have been replaced
7 of 11
Who did the study on duration of LTM?
Bahrick et al.
8 of 11
What happened in the study?
400 people (17-74) were tested on the memory of their classmates. Included a photo recognition test and a free recall test
9 of 11
What was found from the study?
People who were tested within 15 years of graduation were about 90% accurate, after 48 years it declined to about 70%
10 of 11
Why might the recall rates be so high?
Particiapant may have looked in yearbooks regularly, making it easier for them to remember. This means the study lacks validity.
