Strongly Unionist. The DUP have completed a remarkable political transformation from opponents to operators of the GFA in the space of less than a decade.
Opposed to GFA: totally opposed to granting concessions to nationalists and opposed to devolution in the context of power sharing with "unreconstructed terrorists"

Under Trimble: had the choice of remaining outside and isolated in op position to power sharing or undermine it from within by boycotting meetings of the Executive and excluding Sinn Fein from office during their resistance to decommissioning.
In 2003, the DUP became the largest Unionist party, as their working of the devolved government coupled with its opposition to Sinn Fein proved popular with the Unionist electorate, disillusioned by the lack of decommissioning.
