Reasons for breakdown (DUCK)
Lack of skills - for some people, relationships are difficult because they lack interpersonal skills to make hem mutually satisfying. Lack of social skills may be poor conversationalists, poor at indicating their like of other people.

Lack of stimulation- leads to boredom or belief that th relationship isnt going anyway (Baxter). People expect relationships to change and develop and when they do not it seems like justification to break it off or begin a new one (affairs)

Maintenance difficulties- relationships become strained when you do not see each other enough, e.g. going to uni and is often responsible for breakdown of relationships. (Shaver)

A major reason why relationships breakdown is that one or both partners have an affair. Boekhout et al suggested affairs may be a reaction to lack of skills/stimulation.

asked undergraduates to rate various sexual and emotional reasons for men and women to be unfaithful. P's rated sexual reasons to be used by men and emotional reasons to be used by women

found little decrease in relationship satisfaction in long distance as long as lovers were able to be reunited regularly.

Women are more likely to stress unhappiness and incompatibility as reasons for dissolution where men are upset by 'sexual withholding' (Brehm and Kassin)
