Decision Support Systems (DSS)
The purpose of a decision support system (DSS) is to convert raw data from a variety of sources into information that will be used to make high-quality decisions and identify and solve problems.

To make a good business decision, a manager needs to have high-quality information based on good data.
A manager then needs to be able to analyse the data, finding links and trends, so that he can make appropriate decisions, find solutions to problems and build strategies.

A DSS is an interactive application that can provide him with information in a form that makes the process of decision-making easier.
A DSS processes data from a business system and outputs it in an easily understandable form. It presents information in the form of graphs and charts; it can include an expert system.

Most DSS are integrated into organisations day-to-day activities, using data that has been collected as part of an operation system.
Examples, stores can use a DSS to monitor sales data to modify their strategy after analyzing and evaluating their results.

Hospitals can use a medical DSS to assist doctors in making clinical decisions and can improve the quality of medical care by providing more accurate, effective, and reliable diagnoses and treatments AND by avoiding errors caused by lack of knowledge
A DSS can also be used by a bank employee working with a client who has requested a loan. The system can be used to decide whether or not the loan should be given, based on the client’s financial details.
