What are Beta Blockers, what do they do and who might use them?
Drugs that lower the heart rate, this steadys shaking hands so might be used by an archer or a darts player

What are Anabolic Steroids, what do they do and who might use them?
Drugs that mimic testosterone causing bone and muscle growth so might be used by any sports player who need to be strong e.g. a rower or a weight lifter

What are Diuretics, what do they do and who might use them?
Diuretics increase water lose through urine causing weight loss and masking traces of other drugs so could be used by a boxer (to fit into a lower weight division) or a drug user

What are stimulants, what do they do and who might use them?
Drugs that boost alertness and therefore decreases reaction time might be used by a sprinter to improve start time (reaction to the starting gun)

What are Narcotic Analgesics, what do they do and who might use them?
Drugs that kill pain so allows someone to train harder or with an injury without feeling pain. Might be used by an injured person

What are Peptide Hormones, what do they do and who might use them?
Hormones that naturally occur in the body but are taken to cause a natural prosess to increase in rate. Might be used by any sports person

What are the cons of using Beta Blockers?
They can cause someone to faint, have low blood pressure, cramps, heart failure

They change the hormonal balence and can cause high blood pressure, heart disease, infertility, cancer; women may grow facial and body hair and their voises may deepen

Can cause blood to thicken which could lead to a stroke also can cause dehydration which can have a negative effect on performance

What are the cons of using Stimulants?
Increases stress on the heart, can cause high blood pressure, heart and liver problems, increase risk of stroke and they are addictive

What are the cons of using Narcotic Analgesics?
You could make an injury worse or get an injury without realising, they are addictive can cause mood swings and can lead to low blood pressure and constipation

They can cause strokes and abnormal growth

What is EPO (Erythropoietin)?
A Peptide Hormone that increases the number of red blood cells in the blood

It causes the blood to thicken which increases the risk of blood clots and strokes

Drugs that mask the effects of other drugs. Diuretics are a type of masking agent
