Why do plants produce chemicals?
To protect them from pests and pathogens

To treat many types of pain and to lower the fever. Its developed from a chemical found in the leaves and bark of the willow tree.

Its an anit cancer drug. It comes from the bark of the Pacific yew tree. It was discovered when scientists were screening loads of plants looking for potential treatments.

What was Quinine used for and where is it found?
For years it was the main treatment against malaria. It comes from the South American cinchona tree.

Pests can massively reduce crop yields. Give 3 examples of how.
Fruit flies can ruin fruit crops. Weeds that grow near plants can compete for nutrients in the soil. If a plant is infected by a pathogen some energy is taken or used to replace bits. Less energy to make useful things like fruit.

Why can a heavy infestation by a pathogen be particularly bad?
Because it can mean a whole field of plants produces no food at all.

Money spent buying pesticides and disease-resistant or insect resistant crops.
