What effect do stimulants and depressants have on synapses?
Stimulants cause more neurotransmitters to be released across the synapse, speeding up the transmission of the nerve impulse. Depressants, however, bind with receptors in the next neurone, thus blocking the transmission of the nerve impulse.

There are stimulants, depressants, painkillers, performance-enhancers and hallucinogens.

What is addiction, tolerance and withdrawal?
Addiction is the psychological and/or physical need for a drug, and when an addict becomes used to a drug they build a tolerance to it. So they need more of the drug to get the same 'high'. When they are deprived of drugs they suffer from withdrawal.

What is cirrhosis?
Cirrhosis is when the liver produces enzymes to break down alcohol, though these enzymes can be toxic in excess therefore damaging the liver.

What are the short and long term impacts of drinking alcohol?
Short term impacts include lack of judgement, balance and muscle control; blurred vision and slurred speech. This can be dangerous, especially when drinking and driving. Long term effects include liver and brain damage.

What effect does smoking have on the cilia in the respiratory system?
Cilia line the airways and waft continually to get rid of dirt and pathogens, but when mucus builds up, due to the tar from cigarettes, smoker cough excessively to try to get rid of the thick mucus. This causes a 'smoker's cough' and excess coughing
