Name of a Typical Antipsychotic
Chlorpromazine
1 of 12
Dopamine Antagonists
Happens with Typical Antipsychotics, where the drug binds to but does not stimulate D2 receptors, blocking their action. By reducing stimulation in mesolimbic pathway, there are less positive symptoms.
2 of 12
Study found that X% - X% of D2 receptors need to be blocked in the mesolimbic pathway for the drugs to be effective
60% -75%

Problems with Dopamine Antagonists
Study found that 60%-75% of D2 receptors in the mesolimbic pathway must be blocked for the drugs to be effective. In order to do this, a similar number of D2 receptors need to be blocked in other areas of the brain, leading to side effects
4 of 12
Name an Atypical Drug
Clozapine
5 of 12
Rapid Dissociation
When atypical drugs only temporarily occupy the D2 receptors before rapidly dissociating to allow normal dopamine transmission
6 of 12
What is Rapid Dissociation linked to?
Lower levels of extrapyramidal effects
7 of 12
Atypical drugs have a _____ affinity for serotonin receptors and a _____ affinity for D2 receptors
Stronger. Lower.

Antipsychotics Vs Placebo
Meta-analysis of 65 studies, nearly 6,000 patients who had been stabilised on typical or atypical drugs. Some patients taken off their medication & given a placebo. Within 12 months, 64% of those given a placebo relapsed & 27% of those on medication
9 of 12
Extrapyramidal Side Effects
Typical antipsychotic drugs produce extrapyramidal effects which impact the extrapyramidal area of the brain, which helps control motor activity. More than ½ of people taking typical antipsychotics experience parkinson like symptoms
10 of 12
Atypical Vs Typical
Atypical antipsychotics are less likely to produce extrapyramidal effects, making the patients more likely to continue medication, making it more likely to see a reduction in symptoms. But meta-analysis of 15 studies found no differences in effects
11 of 12
Motivation Deficits
When people are prescribed medication, it reinforces the view that something is wrong with them. This prevents individuals from from thinking about possible stressors , reducing motivation to look for possible solutions. Nature VS Nurture
