What are the two main stages in cell division?
NUCLEAR DIVISION: process where the nucleus divides - two types: MITOSIS AND MEIOSIS. CELL DIVISION: follows nuclear division and is the process where the whole cell divides
1 of 5
What is the name of the process of DNA replication?
SEMI-CONSERVATIVE REPLICATION
2 of 5
What are the 4 main requirements for Semi-conservative Replication to take place?
1) The 4 types of nucleotide, each with the bases must be present 2) Both strands of the DNA molecule must act as a template 3)Enzyme DNA polymerase is needed to catalyse the reaction 4) Source of chemical energy is needed to drive the process
3 of 5
How does Semi-conservative Replication work?
DNA helicase causes the 2 strands of the DNA to separate, breaks hydrogen bonds. This activates free nucleotides, using energy, and are attracted to their complimentary bases. Once lined up, DNA polymerase joins the nucleotides together
4 of 5
Why is this process called Semi-conservative Replication?
Because half the original strand, SEMI, is saved and forms the two daughter strands of DNA
