DNA
Long list of chemical instructions
1 of 9
Chromosomes
Long lengths of DNA all coiled up
2 of 9
Genes
Short sections of DNA. Each gene codes for a particular protein
3 of 9
Protein
Important as they control most of the processes in our body and they determine our inherited characteristics, e.g. eye colour, blood type
4 of 9
Alleles
Different versions of the same gene
5 of 9
Double helix
The two strands of a DNA molecule are coiled together in a double helix
6 of 9
Bases
Chemicals which hold the DNA strands together. Complementary bases are Adenine (A) with Thymine (T) and Cytosine (C) with Guanine (G)
7 of 9
Diploid
Two copies of each chromosome arranged in pairs. Human body cells are diploid so their diploid number is 46
8 of 9
Haploid
A single set of unpaired chromosomes. Gametes are haploid so their haploid number is 23 (half the number of chromosomes in a normal cell)
9 of 9
