DNA and Cell division

HideShow resource information
What are chromosomes made from?
Chromosomes are made from DNA.
1 of 22
What are genes?
Genes are short sections of DNA.
2 of 22
Which type of cell division produces genetically identical cells?
Mitosis cell division produces genetically identical cells.
3 of 22
What type of cell division is used in sexual reproduction?
Meiosis is the type of cell division used in sexual reproduction.
4 of 22
What happens in fertilisation?
The male gamete fuses with the female gamete to produce a new cell.
5 of 22
Which type of cells contains a single set of chromosomes?
Gametes contain a single set of chromosomes.
6 of 22
Which type of cells contain two sets of chromosomes?
Body cells contain two sets of chromosomes.
7 of 22
What is DNA?
deoxyribose nucleic acid (DNA) is the material inside the nucleus of a cell carrying the genetic information of the cell.
8 of 22
What are DNA molecules like?
DNA molecules are large and complex.
9 of 22
What type of cell division is used in growth and repair?
Mitosis is used in growth and repair because it produces genetically identical cells to the original one.
10 of 22
What does DNA carry?
DNA carries the genetic codes that determine the characteristics of a living thing.
11 of 22
Does every person have the same DNA?
No,except for identical twins everybody's DNA is unique, this is why people can be identified by their DNA.
12 of 22
What do genes carry?
Each gene codes for a specific protein by specifying the order in which amino acids must be joined together.
13 of 22
Where are the chromosomes in a cell?
The chromosomes are in the nucleus of a cell.Formed by long DNA molecules.
14 of 22
What type of cell division is used in body cells?
Mitosis is used in body cells.
15 of 22
What happens when a body cell divides by mitosis?
When a body cell divides by mitosis first the body cell's genetic information is copied then the cell divides once to form two genetically identical body cells.
16 of 22
What are the reproductive organs?
The reproductive organs in humans are the testes in the male body and the ovaries in the female body.
17 of 22
What are gametes?
Gametes are sex cells.
18 of 22
What are the different gametes in the different sex's?
The gametes in the male reproductive organs are sperm which are produced by the testes and the gametes in the female reproductive organs are the eggs produced by the ovaries.
19 of 22
What type of cell division produces gametes?
The type of cell division that produces gametes is called Meiosis.
20 of 22
What happens in fertilisation?
When fertilisation happens, a single body cell with new pairs of chromosomes is formed. The new cell then divides over and over again by mitosis. This creates the many cells that eventually form a new individual.
21 of 22
What happens in meiosis?
In meiosis the cell divides to form gametes.Copies of the genetic information are made and the cell divides twice to form four gametes.
