DNA
Deoxyribose nucleic acid. Contains all the intructions to put an organism together and make it work.Found in the nucleus of animal and plant cells in long molecules called chromosomes
1 of 10
Gene
Section of DNA. Contains intructions to make a spcific protein
2 of 10
How do cells make proteins?
Stringing 20 different amino acids togetheri n a particualar order to make up thousands of different proteins
3 of 10
What does DNA determine?
What proteins the cell produces e.g haemoglobin, keratin. In turn dtermines what type of cell e.g blood cell, skin cell.
4 of 10
DNA Fingerprinting
A way of cutting up a persons DNA into small sections and seperating them.Everyone has a unique pattern meaning you can tell people apart by comparing samples of their DNA
5 of 10
What is DNA fingerprinting used in?
Forensic science- DNa taken from a crime scene and compared with a sample taken from a suspect to see if they were present. Paternity testing- to see if a man is the father of a particular child.
6 of 10
Scientific problems
False positives can occur if errors are made in the procedure or if data is misinterpreted.
7 of 10
Alles
Different versions of the same gene
8 of 10
Homozygous
If an organism has two alles for a particular gene the same
9 of 10
Hetrozygous
If two alles for a particular gene are different
