DNA

?
How do environment and genetics produce phenotype?
Some of your observable characteristics are inherited from your parents, so are genetic (like blood group or skin colour). However, some observable characteristics are influenced by your environment, (such as piercings and clothes)
1 of 7
What is the relationship between genes, DNA and chromosomes?
Your DNA is a molecule that tells you contains the instructions what you need to develop, live and reproduce. You genes are a short section of DNA that codes for a specific protein. Your chromosomes are a single molecule of DNA bonded to proteins.
2 of 7
What is the structure of DNA?
A polymer of two strands held together at the base pairs. This forms a double helix shape.

Who were the scientists that discovered DNA?
Watson and Crick discovered the helical structure of DNA in 1953. Freidrich Miescher isolated the nucleic acid from the nucleus of a cell in 1868. In 1866 Gregor Mendel showed that certain trait were inherited in 'packages' (genes).
4 of 7
How does DNA mutation may affect an organism and its future offspring.
A mutation changes the genetic code in a gene. They can also be inherited.

Why is biodiversity important?
Biodiversity maintains the possibility that plants might identified for medicines, keeps damage to food chains/webs to a minimum, protects our food supply, helps pollinate flowers and crops.
6 of 7
How is a product produced with genetic engineering?
1. Isolate the gene. 2. Insert it in a host. 3. Produce as many copies of it as possible. 4. Separate and purify the product of the gene
