Simple distillation
Used for separating out a liquid from a solution.
1 of 6
Steps for simple distillation.
1) The solution is heated. 2) The vapour cools, condenses and is collected. 3) The rest of the solution is left behind in the flask.
2 of 6
Give an example of simple distillation.
You can get pure water from sea water by evaporating it and is condensed and collected and salt will be left in the flask.
3 of 6
Problem with simple distillation.
You can only separate things that have very different boiling points.
4 of 6
Fractional distillation
Used to separate a mixture of liquids of similar boiling points.
5 of 6
Steps for fractional distillation.
1) Put your mixture in a flask and put fractionating column on top. 2) Heat it. 3) The liquid with the lowest boiling point evaporates first and will reach the top of the column. 4) You raise the temperature after collection of each liquid.
