when the circadian rhythm is lengthened

this is when the circadian rhythm is shortened.

which direction of travel causes the worst jet lag?
travelling west to east

Why does travelling west to east cause the worst jet lag?
because it means our body is going through phase advance which is harder for our body to adapat to.

why is phase advance harder for our body to adapt to than phase delay?
because naturally our circadian rhythm is 25 hours and we want to go to sleep an hour later each night.

what is social jet lag?
when your body shuffles between time zones, such as waking up early during the week and then waking up later at the weekends.

What are the symptoms of social jet lag?
the same as for regular jet lag.

What did Klein find?
found that flying west to east caused more symptoms of jet lag than flying east to west. also that our body needs one day per time zone crossed to completely recover from jet lag.

What does this research involve?
it involves phase advance, which is supposedly harder for our bodies to recover from.

What did Schwartz find?
when anaylsing the results of American baseball games they found that west coast teams that travelled east had fewer wins than the east coast teams

What does this research show?
that travelling west to east causes more symptoms of jet lag as our bodies find it harder to go to sleep earlier. this affected the baseball teams performance as they had fewer wins

What is an issue with the studies? (AO3)
they are natural experiments, there is no control over extraneous variables, consequentally this reduces the internal validity.

take melatonin 2 hours before you wish to go to sleep

Why could social jet lag be a big issue? (wider evaluation)
in terms of education, schools should start later as this may increase attendence and consequently performance.
