Disease and resistance

?
What are pathogens?
Pathogens are microorganisms that cause infectious disease.
1 of 7
Name the two main pathogens
Bacteria and Viruses
2 of 7
A bacterium splits in to two every?
20 minutes
3 of 7
Name four natural barriers than protect your body from disease
skin, chemicals in tears, chemicals in sweat, stomach acid.
4 of 7
What are the three functions of white blood cells?
ingest pathogens and destroy them, produce antibodies to destroy pathogens, produce antitoxins that neutralise the toxins released by pathogens.
5 of 7
What are memory cells?
Memory cells are a type of white blood cell that can respond quickly when it meets a microorganism for the second time. This is described as being immune to a disease.
6 of 7
What does it mean when a disease has a high mutation rate?
A high mutation rate means that the DNA of the virus frequently changes, so the human body has to destroy the virus using a different antibody each time, which makes it harder to develop immunity.
