How can we prevent maternal deprivation?
There needs to be a continuous relationship between mother and maternal figure.
Attachment must form before the age of 2.5. (critical period)
Must have a primary attachment with one caregiver.

32% of Bowlby's thieves had AP with the main symptom being a lack of moral conscience. 86% of those diagnosed had experienced a week of separation before 5 years old compared to 17% without AP. Early separations may cause AP.

Goldfarb found that children displayed lower IQ when they were deprived then fostered. This supports Bowlby's idea. However, this research was poorly controlled and the children could've been deprived of many things.

Rutter says Bowlby didn't distinguish between privation and deprivation. He says that the evidence found was actually due to privation. We question the theory as it could be explaining the effects of privation more than deprivation.

Koluchova had tow twin boys who were isolated for 18 months to 7 years old. Later adopted, fully recovered to be healthy adults. Critical period may not be critical, more sensitive. Clearly the damage done is reversible.
