What happens in the mouth?
Teeth break down food mechanically. Saliva breaks down food chemically. Food is rolled into a bolus by the tongue and passes the epiglottis.

Amylase, acts upon starch.

What is the function of the oesophagus?
Passing food from the mouth to the stomach.

What happens in the oesophagus?
A wave of muscular contractions called peristalsis move food down.

Gastric juice.

What does gastric juice contain?
Pepsin and hydrochloric acid. Pepsin digests protein into polypeptides, hydrochloric acid kills bacteria.

Chyme

What does the pyloric sphincter do?
Lets food pass slowly into the duodenum.

Pancreatic juice.
