What is diffusion?
Diffusion is the overall movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration
1 of 9
In which states of matter can diffusion occur in and why?
Diffusion can happen in liquids and gases because the particles are able to move freely in these substances
2 of 9
What kind of molecules can diffuse through cell membranes?
Only small molecules can diffuse through cell membranes; for example, glucose, amino acids, water and oxygen
3 of 9
What is osmosis?
Osmosis is the net (overall) movement of water molecules across a partially permeable membrane from a region of higher water concentration to a region of lower water concentration
4 of 9
What is a partially permeable membrane?
A partially permeable membrane is one with very small holes in it
5 of 9
What is active transport?
Active transport is the movement of particles across a membrane against a concentration gradient (i.e. from an area of lower to an area of higher concentration) using energy transferred during respiration
6 of 9
Why is active transport important?
In the digestive system nutrients in the gut diffuse naturally into the blood but sometimes there's a lower concentration of nutrients in the gut than in the blood so active transport allows nutrients to be taken into the blood
7 of 9
Why is energy required for active transport?
Energy is needed for active transport because it works against a concentration gradient and so it moves particles the wrong way
8 of 9
How can you find out the percentage change?
Percentage change= (final mass - initial mass/initial mass) x 100
