what is diffusion?
the net movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
1 of 8
what are the 3 factors that affect diffusion?
1) concentration gradient- steep when fast, shallow when slow 2) temperature- the hotter the water, the faster it will diffuse 3) distance particles must travel - slower=further they have to travel.
2 of 8
what is a partially permeable membrane?
some things can move through and some can't.
3 of 8
how can you speed up diffusion?
increasing the temperature of a liquid will make the molecules move faster or you could increase the concentration difference.
4 of 8
where does diffusion happen in living things?( 4 details)
1) oxygen to the blood in the lungs 2) oxygen out of the blood in the body tissues 3) carbon dioxide into the blood from body tissues 4) in the roots of plants
5 of 8
How can dissolved substances and gases move into and out of cells?
By diffusion
6 of 8
The net movement into or out of cells depends on what?
the concentration of the particles on each side of the cell membrane.
7 of 8
What is the concentration gradient?
The difference in concentration bewtween two areas
