Diffusion, Osmosis and Active Transport

?
What is diffusion?
The random movement and spreading of particles. There is a net diffusion of particles from regions of high concentration to regions of low concentration.
1 of 10
What is osmosis?
Osmosis is a special case of diffusion. It's the overall movement of water molecules across a partially permable membrane from a dilute solution to a more concentrated one.
2 of 10
What is Active Transport?
The pumping of particles across a cell surface membrane usually from a low concentration gradient. This process requires energy.
3 of 10
Where does a plant get the energy from for active transport?
Cellular respiration in the mitochondria.
4 of 10
What does active transport make possible for cells and give examples?
To absorb ions from very dilute solutions, e.g. root cells absorb minerlas from soil water, and small intestine cells absorb glucose from digested food in the gut into the body.
5 of 10
Why is diffusion important in the body?
To move oxygen into cells and to remove carbon dioxide.
6 of 10
Osmosis in potatoes: Results
The percentage change in mass of potato slice is calculated and recorded, indicating whether mass was gained or lost.
7 of 10
Osmosis in potatoes: Conclusion where the solution is dilute
When the solution is very dilute, water enters the potato cells. This is due to osmosis where the solute concentration of the potato cells is greater then the surrounding solution.
8 of 10
Osmosis in potatoes: Conclusion where the solution is concentrated
As the solute concentration of the solution is above that of the potato cells, osmosis causes water to be lost from the potato.
9 of 10
Osmosis in potatoes: Percentage change in mass
Percentage change in mass= difference in the final mass and initial mass divided by the initial mass then multiplied by 100.
