It is argued that the parenting styles of WC parents are less authoritarian than those of MC parents and therefore WC students are not pushed hard enough. It can also be argued that WC parents do not have high enough expectations.

Cultural background of WC and MC differ. MC seen as more optimistic, future-orientated & prefer deferred gratification. WC are fatalistic, present-time orientated and prefer immediate gratification. Could be due to financial position

Linguistic Differences
Sociologists such as Bernstein argue that the WC & MC have different language codes. WC use a restricted code, 1 which is grammatically simple with a limited vocabulary. MC use elaborated code and this is mirrored inside the school.

Cultural Capital and Habitus
MC cultural framework is similar to habitus of school putting MC at an advantage as they feel at home. MC culture has more capital than WC culture when it comes to student's being selected for schools.
