Why do we need protein?
Protein is needed for: growth of the body, to repair muscles and to provide energy.There is high and low biological protein. Protein complementation is when different proteins are combined to provide all amino acids.

Cheese, butter in cakes/pastries, meat products, ready meals.

What is gluten?
Baked mixtures are able to stretch and rise because of a protein called gluten. Wheat flour contains gluten, the highest proportion of gluten can be found in strong plain flour which is used in bread making.

What is primary and secondary food processes?
Primary: Foods are processed straight after harvest. Secondary: Primary processed foods are used to turn into other food products.

What is NSP? What is it used for?
NSP is the chemical name for fibre. Fibre is needed to aid in producing soft, bulky faeces.

What is the function on vitamin C in the body?
Is needed for the absorption of iron and is an important antioxidant.

What does the term organic and genetically modified mean?
Organic farming: producing food using manure, compost and through natural methods of removing weeds. Genetically modified: a scientific technique which uses a specific gene from one plant/animal to be placed into another.

What is a use by and best before date?
Use by: date the food should be consumed by, after this date it may be unsafe to eat. Best before: After this date, food is still safe to consume but may not be at its optimum quality.

Ranking test, rating test and profiling test.

What advice would you give to a child to improve their diet?
Consume breakfast, follow eatwell guide, reduce consumption of sugary foods, high intake of calcium and vitamins D for bones.

What can cause an individual to become obese?
positive energy balance, high consumption of ready meals, processed food and snacking. Lack of physical exercise

High blood pressure, CHD, osteomalacia, anaemia, type 2 diabetes and tooth decay.

b1/b2/b3- energy release, b9/b12- formation of red blood cells, C- absorption of iron, A- see in dim light, D- absorption of calcium, E- antioxidant, K- blood clotting

calcium- teeth and bones, iron- make haemoglobin, sodium- controls amount of water in the body, fluoride- strengthen teeth enamel, iodine- produces the hormone thyroxin, phosphorus- energy release.
