What is the maternal deprivation hypothesis?
Mothers should not be separated from children during the critical period

First 3 years of life, when child makes primary attachment is being made and the child is responsive to a certain type of stimulation

In humans, period is not critical but optimal, this means that the damage can be reversed over time

How do babies attach over time?
From 0-3 months they are disoriented and not making attachment, 3-6 months= try to make an attachment, 6-9 ms = show secure base behaviour

Attempted to classify the maternal bond, had baby and mum in a room, then mum left

What would be expected from a secure child in this situation?
The child would be distressed when the mother leaves, however when she returns, be easily comforted

The child should not care that the mother is gone, then notepad any attention to her when she returns

The child will be really distressed when the mother leaves, whence returns the child will both seek and reject her care

What did bowlby do?
A study of 44 juvenile thieves, investigated their attachments. Found the 14 of them had maternal deprivation and 17 had prolonged separation from mother.

What does maternal deprivation lead to later in life?
Superficial relationships, little empathy and the inability to feel guilt

What are the criticisms of the maternal deprivation hypothesis?
No clear causal link in studies, could be due to other factors, also, the idea that children can only make an attachment to the mother is controversial

Evaluate Bowlbys study
Follan and Minnis - Support for Bowlby - Studies people with RAD (reactive attachment disorder) and found that most found it hard to develop relationships in life, also, suggestions that malnutrition rather than separation leads to delinquency

What did Harlow do?
Separated monkeys from other monkeys including mother and released back months later - found that they had social difficulties when put back into society - if kept separate for less that 3 months the damage was reversible, 6+ = non-reversible

What are the benefits of the maternal deprivation hypothesis?
It helps improve childcare and also raises awareness about what children need.
