GDP (Gross Domestic Product)
Value of all goods and services produced in one year in a country/region. It is shown as a total, or per person (per capita), by dividing the total by the population.

HDI (Human Development Index)
A combined measure of development between 0-1 (0 is the lowest, 1 is the highest), calculated usingthree measures of development - GDP per capita, life expectancy and adult literacy.

Core Regions
Areas that contain the greatest concerntrations of wealth within a country. Examples in Indiainclude Maharastra (including Mumbai) and West Bengal (including Kolkata). Yhese regions contain major citites.

Periphery Regions
Areas that contain the lowest levels of wealth within a country. Examples in India include Bihar,Rajasthan and Jammu & Kashmir. These regions are mostly rural.

Growing enough food to feed yourself and your family.

A large-scale development scheme in which decisions are made by the government and imposed on people because there will be benefits.

A small-scale development scheme in which local communities or people have taken control to improve their own lives.
