'change'- usually improvement- for people and the economy

Gini Coefficient
This measures the extent to which the distribution of income is unequal within a country. Values range from 0-1 (0 being everyone has exactly the same income, 1 being one individual has all the income)

Life expectancy at birth
The number of years that a person can exect to live from birth

HDI (Human Development Index)
Considers both social and economic development. Gives each country a score based on life expectancy, education and income. The score is between 0 and 1 (less developed- 0, more developed- 1)

Number of people per doctor
Average number of people for each doctor in the country (total population divided by total no. of doctors)

Percentage of workforce employed within agriculture
Tells us how many people work within farming.

Percentage of population with access to clean water
The number of people who have an unpolluted water supply from a tap or well at a reasonable distance (a few metres)

Energy consumption (per capita)
Average amount of fuel used by each person in one year. Calculated in 'kilograms of oil equivalent' (i.e. the amount of power given off by 1kg of oil)

Adult literacy rate
Percentage of people over the age of 15 who can read and write

Infant mortality
Number of deaths of children aged 1 or below, for every 1,000 live births. (no. of deaths of children aged 1 or below divided by no. of live births per 1,000)

Gross national product
Average value of goods and services produced by each person in a year.

Corruption perceptions index
Countries where the quality of government is poor often have high levels of corruption. The index grades countries from highly corrupt (0) to 'very clean' (100)

Why is GDP not a good measure of development?
- It doesn't show within country inequality (some are very wealthy, some are not) - It doesn't tell us how a country spends its money (if it's corrupt or does not invest in healthcare)

A population pyramid shows the characteristics of a population- the age and gender of a country. As countries develop, the shape of their population pyramid changes.
