Define development.
The standard of living and quality of life, as well as the process of change. It may involve movement towards a better quality of life as percieved by those undergoing change, but is not always positive.

What are the 5 types of development?
Demographic- life expectancy, ability to travel, wealth. Social- justice, quality of life, equality. Cultural- education, and identity. Political- freedom of speech, stability, democracy. Environmental- conservation, sustainability etc.

Define Sustainable development.
Sustainable development refers to a development that meets the needs of the present, without compromising the ability of future generations to provide for themselves.

Define NIC (Newly Industrialised Country)
A nation who's economy has not yet reach developed status, but in a macroeconomic sense have outpaced their developing counter-parts. They experience rapid growth and industrialisation, and social upheaval can occur as a result of internal migration.

Common features of NICs.
Strong political leaders. Switch from agriculture to industry based economies. Open-market economy, free trade with over nations. Large national companies. Huge amounts of foreign investment. Rapid growth of urban centres and population.

Old divisions of nations include...
First, Second, and Third World. LEDCs and MEDCs.

The more recent 5 fold division is...
Rich Industrialised Countries (Japan), Oil Exporting Countries (United Arab Emirates), Newly Industrialised Countries (India), Formerly Centrally Planned Economies (Russia), and Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (Chad).

Evaluation of the 5 fold division.
STRENGTHS- clear divide been those doing well and not doing well. WEAKNESSES; not perfect, as some countries fall into no/multiple categories.
