What does Enthalphy mean?
Enthalphy is a measure of the total energy of a thermodynamic system.

How can the enthalpy change of a reactant be calculated?
Enthalpy Change= Hproducts - Hreactants
2 of 16
What does exotherimic reaction mean?
Heat is given out to its surroundings
3 of 16
What does endothermic reaction mean?
Heat is taken in from its surroundings
4 of 16
What is standard enthalpy change of combustion?
It is the enthalpy change that occurs when one mole of a substance is burned completly in oxygen under standard conditions.
5 of 16
What is the enthalpy change of a reaction?
The enthalpy change is when molar quantities of reactants as stated in the equation together under standard conditions.
6 of 16
What is the enthalpy change of neutralisation?
The enthalpy change is when one mole of H+ reacts with one mole of OH- to form one mole of water under standard conditions.
7 of 16
What is the standard enthalpy change of formation?
It is the enthalpy change that occurs when one mole of a compound is formed from its elements under standard conditions.

Why do we extrapolate graphs?
We extrapolate graphs to minimise heat loss. (The temperature we would have reached with no heat loss)

What is Hess' Law
It is the enthalpy change for a reaction that is independent of the pathway taken between the initial and final states.
10 of 16
State the factors for Bond Breaking
All reactant bonds. Energey is taken in. Endothermic. Positive H values.
11 of 16
State the factors for Bond forming
All product bonds. Energy is given out. Exothermic. Negative H values.

What is Cracking?
The breaking down of long hydrocarbons into smaller ones. Using heat and a catalyst.
13 of 16
What is a catalyst?
Catalysts speed up the rate of a reaction and can be recovered at the end of the reaction.
14 of 16
What is a homogenous catalyst?
When the reactants are in the same state as the catalyst
15 of 16
What is a hetrogenous catalyst?
Catalyst is in a different state to the reactants. The reaction takes place on a catalyst surface.
