What do determinist arguments propose behaviour is caused by?
Caused by internal/external factors and so behaviour is predictable.

What is free will?
The idea that we are able to have some choice in how we act. It assumes that we are able to choose our behaviour and are self-determined.

What types of determinism contribute to hard determinism?
Environmental determinism, biological determinism and psychic determinism.

Describe environmental determinism
Behaviour is determined by factors outside the individual (external factors).

What is biological determinism?
Behaviour is determined by innate influences.

Behaviour is driven by unconscious forces (rationalised by our conscious mind).

What is soft determinism?
We are influenced b our environment, but also exert influence through the behaviours as we are choosers of our own thoughts.

Reduce individual responsibility.

Environmental determinism - External factors e.g. groups, others and environment affects our behaviour (Waxler-Morrison, Farrington, Wikstrom.

Deterministic - Experience and maturation influence behaviour. Biology and environment have a role e.g. Kohlberg, Farrington, Bandura.

What is the cognitive approach?
Soft determinism as we all have a choice of our thought patterns, however they are determined. Meichenbaum and Beck.

Biological determinism - Focuses on nature, innate behaviour and biology. Brunner, Gottesman and Shields, Beck.

Is the individual differences approach deterministic or free will?
Determinism - Combination of biology and environment e.t.c. Looks at how we are different. McGrath, Thigpen and Cleckley.

Is the psychodynamic perspective deterministic or free will?
Psychic determinism - Inner conflicts of the mind, looks at the role of unconscious mind. Freud, Thigpen and Cleckley.

What type of determinism is the behaviourist perspective?
Environmental determinism - Focuses on environment, nurture side, all born as blank slates e.g. Watson and Raynor, McGrath, Pavlov.
