1974. It first became operatioal in 1982, with an expectation that it would last 30 years.

Lonon has a population of seven million at a rate of 4500 per kilometre. It is the sixth largest city economy in the worldand generates 20% of the UK GDP.

What is the Thames Barrier made up from?
The Thames Barrier is made up from nine concrete islands wich contain six openings for vesels to pass between them. The curved steal gates on the riverbed, can be rotatedupwoods to form a vertical wall to stop flood water from pushing into the thames

How is it ensurely opperational and doing it's job against flooding?
In order for the thames barier to be fully funcinal, the 50 staff members who operate the gates should have reliabe information.

How is this done?
Information registered about the height of the river every 11 minuits from stations along the river.This information is fed into a computer, wich generates possible flood risks.

What did the Scientists from the Thames Estuary 2100 project say about the barrier?
Set up by the enviornmental agency to assess the flood rsk and river management over the next centuary that a new flood barrier would be needed.

What plans were put forward in 2007?
Plans were put forward by the goverment for a new £20 billion dollar flood defence sceme for londond. Designed for the event of 1/1000 floods.
