Weber predicted desacralisation through the idea of disenchantment - magic and myth were no longer important in society - similar to Bruce's idea that rationalisation will eventually remove need for religion.

Instead of turning to the supernatural for help we turn to science to explain problems e.g. Pills when ill, science used to explain natural disasters (e.g tectonic plates caused tsunami)

Sometimes science fails to explain things, for example death of a loved one, injustice, and terrorism can lead people back to the supernatural.

The idea that society has become more specialised - Each institution has less importance - Bruce religion becomes less importants as its previous functions (e.g. religion) are taken over.

Disengagement is the idea that the church has become seperate from the state and is there off a lesser influence on society.
