What does the term death rates mean?
Number of deaths per 1000 of the population per year.

Reasons for decline in death rate
Improved nutrition- Mckeown says responsible for 1/2 of of reduce DR. Better medical- medicines, vaccinations and tech. Smoking + diet- Harper drop in smoking but rise in obesity but easier to treat. Public health measure- improved hygiene.

Decline in dangerous manual labour, reduced rate of transmission of disease, greater public knowledge, lifestyle change, higher income

How long on average a person born in a given year can expect to live

What effect do social, class and regional difference have on death rate
Women generally life longer than men though gap has decreased, North have a lower life expectancy then South and class men in unskilled or routine jobs are nearly 3x likely to die before they are 65
