since 1900 steady decline, some surges. 1900-36.2% deaths caused by infection, 2000- 11.6% caused by infection. estimated in 2051 death rate will highten but decrease back due to baby booms dying.

2016 men= 79.1 women =82.8. 1900 men=48 women =52. Increasing elderly population. Hirsch predicts 2041 same amount of 78 yo as 5 yo in UK. Harper if trends stay same there will be more centenarians in our society- radical longevity.

McKeown- development of NHS , improvement in nutrition. Biggest killers today are due to over induldging.

increasing globalisation means that dangerous jobs have relocated to the developing world and was replaced by the service sector. health and safety has also become a priority of employers.

wages rose meaning better housing and more nutritional foods. introduction of the welfare state providing a safety net. introduction of publich health initiatives suh as clean water and sewege systems.

Burden on Public Services and the dependency ratio. elderly are main consumers on the nations health and social care services. Griffiths Report stated the costs of elderly care would esculate significantly over future years.
