Democracy
A system where power is given to the people and they have the ability to influence legislation

Becoming involved in the political process. Opportunities include joining a party, pressure group or voting in an election

Direct Democracy
Where the population get to directly influence legislation without their being any intermediaries

Referendum
A yes/no vote on a specific question asked by government. They are not binding in the UK due to parliamentary sovereignty

Representative Democracy
Where the public vote for someone to represent them and their constituency in parliament to save the time and effort of the rest of the population

Liberal Democracy
A Democracy with an emphasis on the rights and freedom on the individual and do as much to make parliament as transparent as possible, this includes free and fair elections, peaceful tansfer of power and various beliefs tolerated

Democratic Deficit
Where parliament is not as democratic as it could be, this could be through many things including the House of Lords being unelected and the existance of the Monarchy

Democratic Renewal
Attempts to rectify the current democratic deficit e.g. removing a large amount of hereditary peers in the House of Lords
