What is 'Deforestation'?
The cutting down of forests
1 of 8
Why does Deforestation occur?
For building material, To be burnt as fuel, Produce paper, provide land for agriculture
2 of 8
What does Deforestation lead to?
An increase in carbon dioxide because a) Burning wood releases carbon dioxide and b)Less carbon dioxide is being removed from atmostphere. Reduction in biodiversity and more methane from cattle ect
3 of 8
What are 'Peat Bogs'?
A bog is an area of land that is acidic and waterlogged and Peat is partly-rotted plants that have built up and stores lots of carbon
4 of 8
Explain what farmers do to peat bogs
They are drained so they can be used as farm land, the peat is cut up and dried to use as fuel and the peat is sold to gardeners as compost
5 of 8
What happens when farmers drain peat bogs?
The peat starts to decompose so the carbon dioxide is released into the atmostphere
6 of 8
What is the advantage of 'Peat Free' compost?
It stops farmers having to drain the peat and let more carbon dioxide into the atmostphere
7 of 8
Define: Biodiversity
The number of different species but also the variations between the species and the differences between the habitats
