Overall definition of Photosynthesis
Photolysis of water produces H+ atom which is stored as a fuel in glucose by combining it with CO2 . Oxygen is also given off as a waste product
1 of 7
Overall definition of light dependent
Light energy is trapped in excited electrons, these electrons release energy in a series of redox reactions which is used to produce ATP and NADPH during photophosphorylation. Photolysis of water occurs and oxygen is released as a waste product
2 of 7
Overall definition of light independent
Reduction of CO2 using the products of the light dependent reaction. (RUBISCO , RuBP,GP,GALP) . The products are simple sugars which are used by plants, animals and other organisms in respiration and the synthesis of new biological molecules
3 of 7
NPP
The rate at which energy is transferred into organic molecules, which make up biomass. Some energy is lost as heat. NPP=GPP-R
4 of 7
GPP
The rate at which energy is incorporated into organic molecules in the plant during photosynthesis
5 of 7
% Efficiency of photosynthesis
(GPP/amount of light hitting the leaf ) * 100
6 of 7
Efficiency of energy transfer (primary consumer)
Amount of energy transferred to primary consumer /NPP
