Empirical Formula
The simplest whole number ratio of atomsof each element in a compound.

Stoichiometry
Describes the simple whole number ratios in which chemicals react with each other (basically a balanced equation).

Relative Atomic Mass
Average mass of an atom divided by 1/12 of the mass of a carbon-12 atom.

Avogadro's Number
The number of particles in a mole of substance (6.022 * 10^23, or 60220000000000000000000).

Mole
A quantity of substance contains the Avogadro Number of particles.

Molecular Formula
A formula that tells us the numbers of atoms of each element in a compound.

Relative Atomic Mass
Average mass of an atom divided by 1/12 of the mass of a carbon- 12 atom.

Proton Number
The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom, the same as its atomic number.

Relative Formula Mass
Average mass of an entity divided by 1/12 of the mass of a carbon- 12 atom.

Relative Molecular Mass
Average mass of a molecule divided by 1/12 of the mass of a carbon- 12 atom.

Van der Waals Forces
The weakest type of intermolecular force, caused by instantanous dipoles. Works between all atoms and molecules.

Strong Nulcear Force
The force that holds protons and neutrons together within the nucleus of the atom.

Nucleons
Sub atoic particles that reside in the nucleus - protons and neutrons.

Electrostatic Forces
The forces of attraction and repulsion between electrically charged particles.

Electronegativity
The power of an atom to attract the electrons in a covalent bond.

Hydrogen Bonding
The strongest type of intermolecular force in which a hydrogen atom covalently bonded to an electronegative atom interacts with another electronegative atom (Oxygen, Flourine and Nitrogen).

Dipole - Dipole Force
An intermolecular force that results from the attraction between molecules with permanent dipoles.

Delocalised
Describes electrons that are spread over several atoms to help bond them together.

Lone Pair
A pair of electrons in the outer shell of an atom that is not involved in bonding, also called an unshared pair.
