Definitions: Biological Molecules

?
What is the function of an extracellular enzyme?
To catalyse reactions outside the cell.
1 of 15
What is the function of an intracellular enzyme?
To catalyse reactions inside the cell.
2 of 15
What is activation energy?
Activation Energy is the amount of energy that must be applied for a reaction to proceed. Different reactions require different amounts, enzymes lower the amount needed.
3 of 15
What is a risk factor?
A risk factor is a factor that increased the change of contracting a particular diesease.

What is the definition of Metabolism?
Metabolism is the sum total of all the Biochemical Reactions taking place in the cells of an organism.
5 of 15
What is a Covalent Bond?
Covalent bonds are formed when electrons are shared between atoms. These bonds are very strong. Covalently bonded atoms form new molecules.
6 of 15
What is Denaturation?
Denaturation changes the tertiary structure of an enzyme such that it cannot function and its function cannot be restored. It does not change the primary structure.
7 of 15
What does Optimum pH mean?
Optimum pH is the pH value at which the rate of an enzyme controlled reaction is at its maximum. Each enzyme has a specific optimum pH.
8 of 15
What is a limiting factor?
A factor is described as a limiting factor in a situation where, if all other conditions are kept constant, increasing the concentration of that factor alone will increase the reaction rate.
9 of 15
What is an Enzyme inhibitor?
An inhibitor is any substance or molecule that slows down the rate of an enzyme-controlled reaction by affecting the enzyme in some way.
10 of 15
What is a cofactor?
A cofactor is any substance that must be present to ensure enzyme-controlled reactions take place at the appropriate rate. Some cofactors are a part of the enzyme (prosthetic groups); others affect the enzyme on a temporary basis.
11 of 15
What is a Biosensor?
A Biosensor uses enzyme-controlled reactions to detect the prescense of substances in a highly sensitive and specific way. If the substance is present, the enzyme controlled reaction takes place. The Biosensor has a mechanism for revealing product.
12 of 15
What is a variable?
A variable is any factor that may change and therefore affect the reaction rate. Enzyme investigations require all variables to be controlled.
13 of 15
What is an anomolous result?
An anomalous result or reading is one that looks out of place with the other results.
14 of 15
What is a turnover number?
The turnover number of an enzyme is the number of reactions that enzyme can catalyse per second.
