Substance Misuse
Taking a harmful amount of a substance that can be potentially damaging to mental of physical health.

Synapse
The gap between two neurons where neurotransmitters are released.

Tolerance
When the increased use of a drug reduces it's effectiveness.

Physical dependency
The body is used to taking a drug, therefore chemical changes happen within the brain that substitute normal functioning. Normal function cannot happen without the drug and there are physical effects of withdrawal, e.g. shaking or craving.

Psychological dependency
The drug becomes central to the routine of the user and the need for pleasure maintains drug taking. Stopping results in a break of habit which is difficult to maintain.

Withdrawal
The negative effects of not taking an addictive drug, e.g. shaking or sickness.
