What is independent variable?
The one you change
1 of 20
What is dependent variable?
The one you measure
2 of 20
What is control variable?
Is what you keep the same
3 of 20
What is an aim?
It identifies the purpose of the investigation
4 of 20
What is operational variables?
It refers to how you will define and measure a specific variable as it is used in your study
5 of 20
What is a one-tailed directional hypothesis?
It predicts the nature of the effect of the independent variable on the dependent variable. E.g.: Adults will correctly recall more words than children.
6 of 20
What is two-tailed hypothesis?
It predicts that the independent variable will have an effect on the dependent variable, but the direction of the effect is not specified. E.g.: There will be a difference in how many numbers are correctly recalled by children and adults.
7 of 20
What is extraneous variable?
These are all variables, which are not the independent variable, but could affect the results
8 of 20
What is null hypothesis?
It means there is no relationship between the two variables
9 of 20
What is alternative hypothesis?
It means rejection of null hypothesis
10 of 20
What is a case study?
An in-depth study that gathers a lot of details about one person or a small group
11 of 20
What is event sampling?
It involves observing a particular behaviour and recording that behaviour every time it occurs
12 of 20
What is time sampling?
It involves observation at set length of time at set intervals
13 of 20
What is pilot study?
A pilot study is an initial run-through of the procedures to be used in an investigation
14 of 20
What is covert observation?
When the researcher pretends to be an ordinary member of the group and observes in secret.
15 of 20
What is overt observation?
When the researcher tells the group he or she is conducting research (i.e. they know they are being observed).
16 of 20
What is natural observation?
Here spontaneous behaviour is recorded in a natural setting
17 of 20
What is controlled observation?
It is when observed under controlled laboratory conditions (e.g. Bandura Bobo doll)
18 of 20
What is participant observation?
Here the observer has direct contact with the group of people they are observing
19 of 20
What is non-participant observation?
The researcher does not have direct contact with the people being observed.
