Peripheral
A hardware component connected to a computer externally

RAM
(Random Access Memory) Memory which can be read from or written too. It is volatile. Used to hold programs and data that the user is currently working on

(Read Only Memory) Memory which can be read from but not written too. Rom is non-volatile. Rom is used to store programs that are frequenly required by the computer such as the 'booting up' program for windows.

Special type of memory used by the CPU. It is small, fast and volatile.

Encryption
Scrambling data to make it secure. Only users with the key and the code will be abe to unscramble and read the data.

Software or hardware that limits the data that can be sent to or from a computer, preventing unauthorised access.

Backup
A copy of data that is made in case the original data is lost or damaged. The backup can be used to restore the original data.

Bandwidth
The amount of data being transmitted in a fixed amount of time. Measured in megabits per second.

Allows the exchanging of data over a short distance.

A set of rules which govern the way in which data is transmitted between computer networks.

A router is a device which connects two or more networks together.

This limits what a user can do on the network by giving the users different levels of access.

Unwanted emails.

Malicious software (malware) which is secretly installed on a users computer. It collects pieces of information about the user.

A website which is only available for employees or members of an organisation, school or college.

(Internet Service Provider) An ISP is a company which provides the user with a connection to the internet for a fee.

This allows the user to type in the web address or URL.

Convetrts digital signals from your computer into anologue signals so they can travel down the phone line.

(Voice Over Internet Protocol) Technology that allows you to make phone calls over the internet.

Video Conferencing
Communication on a network using sound and video. A high bandwidth is required to ensure the quality of the video conference.

(Wireless Application Protocol) A communication protocol for accessing netork services and information using mobile devices.

A medium range wireless technology used t allow devices to connect together.

Batch Processing
Involves collecting groups or batches of similar data over a period of time and imputting it to a computer system.

Master File
Information which does not change in the short term is stored in the customer master file. It contains their name, address and pre-prineted meter reading cards.

Transaction File
Contains the customers account number and the meter reading. It is a temporary file used to update the master file.

Data Logging
A data logging system automatically collects data over a certain period of time, using sensors without human intervention. Data can be stored over a period of time and then analysed by special or dedicated software.

Computer systems that can monitor their own activity by controlling their outputs according to their inputs , are said to have feedback.

(Secure Electronic Transaction) A protocol co-owned by Visa and Mastercard. This uses digital signatures and digital certificates.

An electronic identification taht confirms that the user is and authentic person. A bank will issue this certificate which contains information about the user.

A wizard is a user interface which presents the user with a sequence of dialogue boxes that lead the user through a series of well-defined steps.

(Network Interface Card) A card slotted into the computers motherboard. Thye are needed if the computer does not have a built-in chip on the motherboard.

A switch is a single connection point for a group of computers. The switch is connected to a file server and organises communtication between the file server and the computers connected to it.
