Surface Runoff
Flows over a surface or in small channels, common in arid areas.
1 of 8
Through Flow
Water moving slowly downhill through the soil. Through flow is faster through cracks and animal burrows.
2 of 8
Infiltration
Water soaks into the soil. Infiltration rates are influenced by soil type, soil structure and how much water is already in the soil. In storm conditions or heavy rain, water cannot infiltrate therefore runs along the surface as 'surface runoff'.
3 of 8
Percolation
Water that seeps down through the soil and moves or 'percolates' through rocks.
4 of 8
Evaporation
Water turning into water vapour - turning from a liquid into a gas.
5 of 8
Transpiration
Evaporation from plant leaves - plant leaves and trees take up water through their roots and transport it to their leaves where it evaporates into the atmosphere.
6 of 8
Evapotranspiration
The process of evaporation and transpiration together.
7 of 8
River Discharge
The amount of water flowing through a river. (m/s)
