It gives significance to everyday life. It is part of a larger purpose.

There must be a belief in the supernatural or a God, eg Christianity, Hinduism

You cannot define what is supernatural, eg Aliens could be.

What is the Functional definition?
Religion has a function in society - uniting people and helping them struggle with problems in life.

It may be too inclusive - football supporters could be classed as a religious group.

What is the Polythetic definition?
To qualify, they must have a certain number of factors such as the belief in God, a concern for the sacred, rituals, traditions, links eith ethnicity, etc

What is a problem with the polythetic definition?
It may be too broad.

What did Giddens say?
Religion invloves a set of symbols, invoking feelings of reverence or awe, and are linked to rituals or ceremonies engaged in by a community of believers.
