In 2004, a parents right to smack their child was outlawed with the introduction of the Children's Act. Also, homosexuality was considered a crime in the UK until 1967

Official statistics, victim surveys and offender surveys

What are official statistics?
Government records of the total number of crimes reported to the police and recorded in the official figures. These are published to the Home Office on an annual basis

How are official statistics helpful?
They show the number of crimes reported across the country and specific regions. This allows the government to develop crime prevention strategies, policing initiatives and direct resources to areas most in need

Surveys which record people's experience of crime over a specific period
