women talk more, interrupt more/overlap, speak in private contexts, build relations and speak symmetrically

men work to secure their position in a hierarchy of other men and demonstrate their status by getting attention whereas women aim to support, help and comfort each other

men strive to be independent and do things themselves to maintain their dominance and status whereas women tend to be more intimate and personal, sharing their difficulties with others

men seek to provide a solution to problems as this seems the logical response whereas women seek to sympathise and understand problems; when men open up about a difficulty they want an answer but when women do, they merely want to be listened to

men's talk tends to be based around transferring factual information to one another, whereas women's talk tends to be more sentimental and usually involves an expression of emotions or feelings

men tend to phrase their requests as commands or orders and simply say what they want whereas women phrase theirs as proposals in an attempt to appear more polite and well-mannered

men tend to resort to conflict or physical confrontations when a dispute occurs whereas women tend to negotiate and come to a mutual agreement over something which suits both parties
