De Broglie Wave

?
What did De Broglie propose?
He proposed that if light could behave like a wave and a particle- other particles may be able to show wave like behaviour
1 of 10
State the De Broglie equation and explain how it was derived
lambda = h/mv ] derived from equations of energy from quantum mechanics and relativity
2 of 10
Describe the Davisson- Germer electron diffraction experiment
A beam of electrons are accelerated (by a different p.d's) at a Ni crystal and the intensity of the scattered electron beam is detected (at different angles)
3 of 10
What observations where made from the Davisson- Germer electron diffraction experiment?
Strong peak for 5V for theta~50 degrees due to constructive interference of electrons which are scattered from different layers of regularly spaced atoms in the Ni crystal.
4 of 10
What is Bragg's law and what does it model?
lambda = 2d*sin(theta) ] this models the peak scattered intensity/wavelength that is produced when a x-ray is scattered after being incident on a crystal
5 of 10
State the significance of the relationship between Bragg''s law and the De Broglie equation
They both give the same solution when using results from the Davisson-Germer experiment. Thus, the experiment provides direct verification that electrons have a wave nature.
6 of 10
Summarise G.P Thomsons experiment and it's significance
diffraction pattern of electron beam accelerated through a gold foil is the same as that of x-rays (shows wave nature of electrons)
7 of 10
What can we conclude form both Bohr's model and De broglie's postulate? (2 conclusions)
1) There must be a continuous standing wave around the nucleus; 2) a whole number of wavelengths must fit around the circumference of the electrons orbit (n*lambda=2pi*r)
8 of 10
What does the constructive interference of electrons in an atom produce?
It produces 'allowed' circular orbits that an electron can travel.
9 of 10
What does destructive interference of electrons produce in an atom?
It produces 'gaps' between the 'allowed' orbits.
