define correlation
shows the strength and direction of an association between 2 or more co-variables
1 of 8
define co-variables
variables investigated in a correlation
e.g. eight and weight
2 of 8
what is a positive correlation?
when both variables increase in number
3 of 8
what is a negative correlation?
when one variable increases and the other decreases
4 of 8
what is a zero correlation?
when neither variable increases or decreases with the other
5 of 8
describe a difference between experiments ad correlations
in an experiment the investigator manipulates the IV in order to measure the effect of the DV and so a cause can be inferred
whereas in a correlation there is no manipulation of an IV so its not possible to establish a cause and effect between one co-vari
6 of 8
what is a strength of correlations
strong relating variables or interesting patterns can help suggest ideas for future research
7 of 8
what is a limitation of correlations?
correlations can't show cause and effect as a result of the lack of manipulation and control so we don't know which co-variable is causing the other variable to change
