Data Collection and Sampling

?
Census
(population)
Advantages -
- a completely accurate result

Disadvantages -
- time consuming and expensive. Plus the larger the population, the harder it will be to process the quantity of data
- cannot be used when the testing process destroys the item (e.g. lifespan
1 of 7
Sample
(population)
Advantages -
- less time consuming and expensive than a census, as fewer items of data are collected and it will be easier to process

Disadvantages -
- data may not be accurate, the sample may not be large enough to be representative of the entire popu
2 of 7
Simple Random
(stratified sampling)
Advantages -
- free of bias
- easy and cheap to implement (for small samples)

Disadvantages -
- not suitable when population or sample size is large
- a sampling frame is needed
3 of 7
Systematic
(stratified sampling)
Advantages -
- quick and easy to use
- suitable for large samples

Disadvantages -
- a sampling frame is needed
- it can introduce bias if the sampling frame is not random
4 of 7
Stratified
(stratified sampling)
Advantages -
- sample accurately reflects the population structure and guarantees proportional representation

Disadvantages -
- population must be clearly classified into strata
- selection within strata has the same disadvantages as simple random samp
5 of 7
Quota
(non-random sampling)
Advantages -
- allows a small sample to still be represented of the population
- no sampling frame is needed
- quick, easy and inexpensive

Disadvantage -
- non-random so can introduce bias
- population needs to be divided to groups, which can be costly
6 of 7
Opportunity
(non-random sampling)
Advantages -
- easy to carry out and inexpensive

Disadvantages -
- unlikely to provide a representative sample
