Data and data collection

?
Qualitative
This is data such as the colour of cars
1 of 9
Discrete quantative
This is numerical data that can only take certain values, such as the number of people on a bus
2 of 9
Continuous quantative
This is numerical data that can take any value in a range of values, such as the weight of apples
3 of 9
Primary data
This is data collected using surveys or experiments
4 of 9
Secondary data
This is data collected from existing lists or tables
5 of 9
Look at historical data
This would be used to predict whether it will rain on 4 July in Edinburgh, for example. You would look back at the records for all previous years
6 of 9
Experiment
This would be used to test the probability of an event that cannot be predicted, such as how many blue balls are in a bag. By taking out 100 balls, you can get an approximate probability
7 of 9
Equally likely outcomes
This is used when the probability of an event can be predicted. For example, taking a king from a pack of cards
8 of 9
Surveys
These are used when there is no historical data and no way to predict probabilites. A survey, for example, would be used to find out what subject is the favorite amongst year 7 pupils
